Long-Term Implant Care Guide

Clinical recommendations for maintaining implant health and function over the long term after osseointegration is complete.

Dental implant anatomical model — tooth, root and jawbone

The success of implant treatment depends not only on the surgical procedure itself but also on the care habits maintained afterwards. Once osseointegration is complete, an implant can function for many years with the right care.

For daily oral hygiene, a soft-bristled or specialist implant brush, interdental brush and alcohol-free mouthwash are recommended. The health of the soft tissue surrounding the implant directly affects its longevity.

Regular clinical check-ups — at least twice a year — are essential to monitor bone levels and gum tissue around the implant. Radiographic assessment plays a critical role in detecting early signs of peri-implantitis.

Bleeding, pain, swelling or a feeling of looseness around the implant can be early signs of peri-implantitis; clinical evaluation should not be delayed if these symptoms appear. Peri-implantitis responds better to treatment when addressed early.

Teeth grinding (bruxism) can place excessive load on implants, potentially compromising their long-term success. Discussing management options such as a night guard with your dentist is advisable.
