Zirconia or Porcelain Crown: What's the Difference?

Comparing durability, aesthetics and clinical indications for two popular crown materials.

Zirconia crowns are a current restoration option suitable for both front and back teeth thanks to their high strength and light transmission. The absence of a metal framework is generally favourable for gum health.

Porcelain crowns have been in use for decades and offer good aesthetics. Traditional metal-porcelain crowns may be more prone to chipping in heavy biting zones; all-ceramic options address this.

Material selection is evaluated by the dentist based on individual factors such as oral structure, bite force, aesthetic expectations and gum health. Both options can yield long-term results when correctly applied.

The crowning decision is made individually after examination and imaging as required; general superiority claims can be misleading without clinical context.
